Picture a cozy bakery bustling with energy—warm light, sweet scents, rows upon rows of perfectly baked treats. It’s an environment full of life, but also expectations. In this world lives Cookie, who feels small against the backdrop of perfection. Everywhere Cookie looks, there are other pastries that seem more accomplished—cakes that stand tall with beautiful frosting, muffins bursting with confidence, croissants crisp and golden. Cookie looks around and thinks, ‘Everyone else is so good at what they do. Why not me?’

From Cookie’s perspective, this bakery could be any classroom, playground, or community where others seem to shine brighter. That sense of inadequacy creeps in quietly. Cookie works hard—studies, practices, follows directions—but still feels that something’s missing. Intelligence seems to belong to others.

Through these early pages, I wanted to capture the emotional tension children feel when they equate intelligence with perfection. Cookie’s perfectionism leads to stress and self-doubt. They begin believing that one mistake means failure. And yet, we know from experience that mistakes are the teachers of progress. Cookie doesn’t know that yet. All Cookie sees is comparison and a gap they can’t seem to close.
